EZ-Paste Barium Sulfate

EZ-Paste Barium Sulfate

Nanric now offers EZ-Paste®, which is also a radiopaque paste that provides excellent radiographic visualization of the true hoof wall. One tube contains 454 grams (16 oz). Applied in a continuous bead (size of a pencil) from the coronal band to the surface of the soil, the paste appears as an opaque (white line) on your film (ref. X-ray of the equine foot). Due to the very shallow depth of the horn at the most proximal crown of the hoof wall, the actual margin of the horn is never visible on even the smoothest penetrating sights. Dr. Redden uses dough because it provides more information than his previous yarn technique. At best, the thread only touches the high points along the face of the wall.

The paste has many advantages:

  • Quick and easy to apply. Dr. Redden squeezes EZ-Paste® into a 20cc syringe for easier, consistent application. You can then tape the syringe housing to the side of your x-ray machine so that the syringe of EZ-Paste® is readily available.
  • Wipes easily with an alcohol-dampened paper towel. Use a continuous wipe to avoid smudging.
  • Clearly defines all growth rings and abnormal curvatures along the face of the capsule (valuable background information).
  • Provides easy marker margins. Dr. Redden routinely starts the cord at the top of the coronary sulcus. A valuable marker for tracking leads.
  • Provides an accurate measurement of the lamellar thickness of the horn (HL area).
Dr. Redden measures just below the extensor process and at the top of the PIII. A line perpendicular from the bone to the opaque line. The lamellar zone of the horn is one of the most informative soft tissue perimeters of the foot, as it is the first to change with significant episodes of laminitis and other soft tissue disease syndromes (ref. X-ray of the foot equine).
